John P. Whitelaw is a retired physician with a long-time interest in photography and natural history (especially birds), an accomplished photographer and a fine art printmaker.

His work has been strongly influenced by the American landscape photographer Charles Cramer and the National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore.  His subjects are usually unconventional and often reflect the Japanese aesthetic known as ‘Wabi-Sabi’ which deals with things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.  His images of small patches of walls encountered during his travels echo Leonard da Vinci’s comment that ‘…if you look at them carefully enough, you will make some wonderful discoveries.’

John’s photographs are displayed in Denmark, Germany, Taiwan, Mexico, Panama, New York, Hong Kong, and all over the United States and Canada.

He is the photographer and lead editor of ’Elusive Birds of the Tropical Understory’ published by Cornell University Press -- to be released April 15th, 2022.

He and his wife Christine live in Nanaimo, B.C., Canada
